This summer, Exact Sciences worked with Maydm, a community partner, to host four interns interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. The internship program organized by Maydm gives high school students the opportunity to utilize previously completed training and put their skills to work at major local companies.

Between late June and early August, the program’s interns worked directly with Exact Sciences “hosts” on project. The feedback from the hosts has been nothing but positive for this year’s interns. “I know that they're so impressed with the students,” said Exact Sciences Inclusion and Talent Strategy Manager Ashley Saunders.

Elfin Wiriyan’s experience interning with the data science team allowed her to put her passion for coding and programming to work. Wiriyan used probabilities to help inform questions such as whether a patient will complete their cancer screening test. The job was a perfect fit for the math enthusiast.

Maydm founder and executive director Winnie Karanja hopes to expand the internship program in the future, allowing the opportunity for more students to get involved.
