Event: Susan G. Komen 3-Day: a 60-mile walk to end breast cancer

Location: San Diego, California

Date: November 15-17, 2024

Exact Sciences’ involvement: Christina Zaleski, breast cancer survivor and director of genetic counseling at PreventionGenetics, part of Exact Sciences, walked 60 miles in three days with the Hakuna Ma Tatas by her side. The team, named after the Swahili phrase that means “no worries,” first came together in 2022 following Christina’s diagnosis.

Exact Sciences contributed $10,000 towards the Hakuna Ma Tatas’ fundraising goal for the event.

Impact: The team raised over $90,000 for Susan G. Komen and its work to fight breast cancer. Since 2022, the Hakuna Ma Tatas have raised almost $200,000 for breast cancer research.

Memorable moment: Walking alongside Christina was her friend and breast surgeon, Dr. Anna Seydel. After learning she did not need chemotherapy, Christina invited Dr. Seydel to walk in their first Susan G. Komen 3-Day in 2022.

“It was a moment to celebrate, that I wasn't going to have to face chemotherapy,” says Zaleski. “I thought, if I'm being spared from this then I need to find a way to make something good come from it.”
